Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas produced by the
decay
of uranium in soil and rock. It is the largest form of radiation affecting
the
general public. Radon can penetrate any structure through floors, drains,
joints and foundation walls. The United States Environmental Protection
Agency
(E.P.A.), the Center for Disease Control and the U.S. Surgeon General, all
link
indoor radon exposure to lung cancer risks. The EPA and the Surgeon
General recommend testing all homes for radon on an annual basis.
CARNELL offers:
- Testing utilizing EPA approved canisters
- Continuous Radon
Monitoring (CRM)
- NYS Department of Health approved in-house

water testing is
recommended
at time of purchase and annually there after. Municipal systems are tested
by
the Municipality.
Water contaminants can have a variety of effects.
Some
contaminants can simply cause staining of laundry and plumbing fixtures,
while
others have harmful health effects. The EPA has set maximum limits for many
contaminants. Analysis of drinking water depends upon accurate and up to date
sampling procedures.

Leaking underground storage tanks cause harmful effects to the environment.
Property owners are responsible for the remediation process for the soil and
ground water on their site and adjacent affected properties. Underground
clean
up can be very costly. Home buyers can avoid this problem by having the UST
tested prior to buying the property.
CARNELL offers:
- On-site UST testing
- On-site soil sampling
- Liaison
with oil company and insurance company

 A septic/cesspool dye is introduced
into the
sanitary waste system of a structure. Water is run at the various
plumbing fixtures and allowed to run for an extended time. Exterior areas in
the location where the sanitary in ground system is installed are examined

Asbestos is a natural mineral
fiber that has been
used in over
3,000 products. The properties of asbestos fibers made it attractive as an
insulating material for pipes, boilers, and tanks.
Unfortunately,
asbestos fibers were found to be hazardous to human health. Asbestos fibers
are
a health hazard when they are released into the air and can be inhaled.
CARNELL
is able to provide asbestos surveys for residential and commercial buildings.
CARNELL offers:
- Asbestos Sample Analysis - PLM & TEM
- Asbestos
Investigations/Surveys ACP-5 and ACP-7
- Project Design &

Three
million tons of lead lines the walls of 57,000,000 American homes! Over time
lead paint deteriorates and can cause hazardous conditions. Medical studies
have proven that lead poisoning resulting from the ingestion of lead
particles
is one of the most severe environmental hazards threatening children.
Reliable
and quick lead paint detection and remedial recommendations are crucial.
CARNELL is able to perform non-destructive and reliable lead paint
testing with state of the art testing equipment, the X-Ray Fluorescence
(XRF).
CARNELL offers:
- X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) lead paint detection
- Risk Assessment
- Soil, water and dust sampling

 SYNTHETIC STUCCO (Exterior Insulation
and Finish
System - EIFS)
consists of sheets of foam attached to the exterior and covered with a thin
coating of acrylic material that looks like real stucco. Installation details
(flashing and back wrapped joins with caulking) are critical to keep water
from
being trapped within walls. EIFS is a long-lasting exterior if properly
installed and maintained. Improper installations have resulted in serious
water
problems and rot in walls. Maintenance consists of recaulking joints; the
surface does not need painting. Testing is performed by a trained EIFS
certified
inspector.

Mold (Fungi) grows everywhere, both
indoors and
outdoors. Mold
needs both food and water to reproduce. At least 1,000 species of mold are
common in the United States. In a house, it is most likely to grow where
there
is water or dampness - such as bathrooms and basements. Removing the source
of
moisture is critical to preventing mold growth. Most types of mold routinely
encountered are not hazardous to healthy individuals, however, overexposure
can
cause coughs, congestion, runny nose, eye irritation or aggravation of
asthma.
CARNELL is certified to
provide both analysis and remediation consultations for mold.
CARNELL offers:
- Viable and non-viable air sampling
- Bulk and swab
sampling
- Project design and monitoring
